Choices

You can choose how life affects you and you can choose to be happy. It is not what happens to us that makes us unhappy it is how we accept what happens that makes unhappy. In other words: when you are unhappy it is because you have chosen to be unhappy. For instance: if you are laid off you can view it as your life being over or you can view it as an opportunity to find a job that you really want. Take the economy; if you watch the news you think everyone is out of work. Actually, about 10% of people are out of work but 90% have work.

You also tend to make your own reality. If you believe that that no one is hiring then you are not going to look hard for work . If you believe that you have skills that an employers would want, then you will keep looking until you found that employer.

Stop watching the news and make a decision to be happy and shape our own future.

Mastermind Alliance

You are the average of the people you hang around with. I believe this to be true so if you want to expand your horizons you need to be around people that are where you want to be. If you want to make more money then you need to spend time with people that are making more money than you. If you want to have a great marriage hang out with people that have a great marriage. A mastermind alliance is a group that helps lift everyone in the group to greater levels and through this concept. If you want to get better at something find a group that is interested in that (or create one) and start it.

Placing your Insecurities on Others

If someone has achieved something then they have the right to happy about what they have achieved. For example, Ron Morris (www.TAERADIO.com) was talking about his overcoming cancer. He mentioned that it was sheer will, he was just happy that he made it through insurmountable odds and he has more years to share his wisdom with others and spend time with his wife and kids. Then some of the listeners took it as the opposite; they made it seem like he also said that anyone that did not overcome cancer were not trying hard enough. This is not the case, but by the listener writing this to Ron they were steeling away his happiness. The same thing happened with Ron talking about his Audi A8. He was talking about buying this car because he liked it (not bragging what so ever), and someone wrote in saying that he is making people feel bad because they could not afford a car like that. That is wrong; they are taking away his joy because someone feels bad about their own position. If you feel bad about your position in life then do something about, do not complain to people about your feelings being hurt when no negativity was part of their statement.

Goals 2010

For the last couple of years I have set my goals for the upcoming year at about this time (I stole this from Dan Miller). Something I realized last night when I reviewing my goals for this year and making the ones for next is that I am growing. A year ago I was pretty unsure what my passions were and what I wanted to do with myself but I now am more confident about what I have to offer to others and what I can build a business from. With this realization I believe that you need to set yearly goals and write them down. This will help you to define where you want to go in life and help you see that you are growing when you review past goals.

As a side not I also learned that I try to do too many things at once and do not accomplish anything. I need to pick a couple of things at a time and focus on them in order to success.

So set your goals and keep on growing. If you would like a copy of the goals worksheet that I use please visit my website through the following link and go to the resources page.

I am back

It has been quite a while since I last posted because I have been traveling to France for my job. I made some more life time friends and learned a lot about the French culture. One of the things that I really appreciated and believe Americans need to consider is respecting their personal time and their time with their friends and family. They work less in France than we do because their jobs are to support their lives, not like here in America where we tend to make our job the main part of our lives (which is sometimes because we are supporting an out of control life style). They are not always rushing everywhere like we are. At restaurants they are not pressuring you out the door, dinner tends to take about 2 hours. It is just time to relax with friends and family where here we are trying to get 1000 things done before we go to bed.

Another thing I noticed is that their meals are higher in carbs and fat and they tend to smoke more than most Americans. Some of our scientists think it is because of the wine they drink. This is definitely true but one issue with the way we look at things here is that everything is one dimensional. We tend to look at the fix to our problems like they are from one source. For example it was all of the fat we ate that made us unhealthy, then it was that we ate too many carbs which made us fat. Now the scientists are saying the reason the French are so healthy is because of a chemical in the red wine called resveratrol. Here are the other reasons I observed that I believe are a part of why the French are so healthy: The wine, they are very low stress, they do not work themselves to death, they value time with family and friends, they eat real food (everything had a mommy and a daddy and was made when it was ordered), they eat in moderation, they walk more than we do, they do not drive as much as we do, and they are not trying to keep up with the Jonses.

Take a lesson from the French to live happier and longer lives.

Expand Your World

I recently received a comment on one of my previous posts which an individual shared some differing opinions on the education system. I really appreciated these comments because it helped to expand my world view. This lesson is important to everyone who wishes to be successful. You need to surround yourself with people that do and don’t think like you and you have to consider their differing opinions. If you choose to think you are always right and do not allow new and differing ideas in you have limited yourself. In order to grow you have to be able to take in these differing thoughts, consider them, dissect them, and make a decision whether or not to change your thoughts or not.

The Joy of Exercise

I go to the gym very often and I have noticed 2 kinds of people.  First are the people that enjoy being at the gym and there are those who view it as a chore.  I am a part of the former group; I enjoy going to the gym.   The problem I have is with people that view the gym as a chore.  They look at it like this painful process that they have to get through in order to reach a goal like weight loss, healthy changes in their life style because of medical issues, or they think it is what you are supposed to do.  No matter the reason you go to the gym when you look at it like a chore you will always hate going there and have an internal struggle when you go there.  If this is the case you will eventually stop going.  You can only will yourself through something you hate for so long.  If you feel exercise is important then you need to find your motivation.  My motivation is the confidence I have gained through changing my body.  I am now in a good mood and never embarrassed about my body.

Our Education System Sucks

Here is another letter I wrote, this time about our education system.

I was listening to your Thursday show and one of the professors mentioned that the Secretary of Education believes that we need to start going to school longer. I believe that is a load of bull. I think we need to start actually educating our children and the parents need to take more responsibility in the education of their children. When I was growing up I remember my mother working with me when I was very young to learn how to properly pronounce words like spaghetti and giraffe.

How is it that some people are able to excel in school while only going 9 months out of the year when others fall behind and need more summer school? Maybe the reason I was able to take calculus courses in high school while others were struggling with algebra is because my parents cared how I did and took part in my education. By the way, my parents did not go to college and I doubt they understood calculus. My dad was a sheet metal worker and my mother was a stay at home mother that periodically took a job to help us get by.

While I was in school I knew I had some teachers that just went through the motions, these are not the teachers I want teaching if my kids have to go to school year round. In this case I want my kids to get a job (or start a business) like I did and learn how money and the world works.

My next frustration is the way we look at college. I was lucky enough to take 2 years off between high school and college to work and live on my own. This helped me to realize that I am bored to death by manual labor and have little room to advance unless grow my brain.

When we are in high school we are told that college is the only way we can be something in the world. It is the fix all for everything. We are led to believe that we need to go and get any degree and we will make a lot of money. We are also led to believe that we need to go to school at all costs i.e. student loans. When I finally made it to collage I met a lot of students that were there to get a bachelor in psychology and they thought they would be making a lot of money. I knew that this type of degree will make minimum wage or just above and each job opening has 300+ applications in a good economy. Why do we teach our children that it is ok to go into debt to get a psychology degree? They would do better if they worked their way up in McDonalds management without the debt.

Here are my recommendations for better education. We need to take a part in the education of our children, not just hand them off to teachers. We need to teach our children that there 2 reasons we go to college, either to get a piece of paper so someone will give us a job or the enrichment. We need to make that decision before we take the step into college. Teach them that debt for college is the easy way out, there other options for paying for school. Teach them that you do not have to go to college to do well in the world but they need to continue their education.

You Have To Keep on Keepin’ On

If you have ever tried to start a business you realize that is is probably one of the hardest things to do. You are constantly working and learning trying to take what you are doing to the next level. You work day in and day out with little to show for it besides your tired body. Every free minute is put into improving your business. I have come to a realization that business success is not a 1 for 1 type of equation. In the beginning it is more like 100 to 1 (a 100 hours of work for 1 hour of success). But when you reach that inkling of success you are so happy because what you are doing is giving you a result. You keep working and then it becomes 75 to 1, then 50 to one, soon it is 1 to 1. At this point your business is rolling and you begin to see the true potential of owning your own business. It then becomes 1 to 2, then 1 to 50, then 1 to 100. You have perfected your craft so much you are able to do 1 hour of work for 100 hours of success. All of your time at the beginning has paid off. The main message here is to keep on working for what you want your business to be. It may seem all for nothing and very hard but if it was easy then everybody would be starting a business. It is not easy and because of this you have chosen to step out from the many average people and take on this monster called starting a business. Don’t give up because you never know what success are around the corner.

Technology and The Primitive Mind

There was a time in our history where we had to be aware of every noise and sight so that we could survive. If we were not we would have been a meal for another animal. Today we do not have to worry about this but our minds are still trained to easily be distracted. For us to learn and be productive we had to be taught to pay attention, have patience, and manners. With technology we need less and less of these skills. Here are some examples: We do not have to pay attention as much in class because we can look anything up on the internet. We do not have to be patient because the iPhone allows us to buy any app for any interest we have. We are able to avoid thinking and physically experiencing life because we can live vicariously through the TV with all of the available channels. The internet is also giving instance access to very negative things and since it is so easy to reach it can easily take over our lives. Heck, Kevin Miller recently posted an article (http://kevinmiller.typepad.com/my_weblog/) describing being built for comfort not speed that relates to this.

We need to be aware of the part of ourselves we are catering to and identify the things we are doing that are not in line with our goals. Take a look at the successful people; they had to overcome their natural tendencies and focus unrelentingly on a goal. If they did not they would just be average. Do you want to be average? If not what do you have to overcome in your primitive brain that is holding you back from success?
